About Ebi Otaku

Why this site exists, who's behind it, and how to support the work.

I'm Ebiotaku, an ornamental shrimp keeper and breeder based in Japan. This site is my attempt to build the world-class, multilingual reference for ornamental shrimp that I always wished existed.

Why this site exists

The English-speaking, Japanese-speaking, German-speaking, and Mandarin-speaking shrimp communities have all built remarkable but isolated knowledge bases. Ebi Otaku tries to bridge them — same data, six languages, structured so you can compare a Caridina dennerli care sheet across linguistic communities and have the same numbers come up.

Editorial policy

Every word on this site is written by a human — me. I do not use AI to draft species descriptions, glossary entries, or care guides. Translations into traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, German, and Korean are the hardest part: I'm trying to keep them native-quality, but I'm not a native speaker of those languages.

If you spot anything wrong — factually or linguistically — please tell me. Open a GitHub issue, email me, or DM. Corrections land in the next deploy.

Beyond the site

I also run hands-on shrimp keeping seminars and contribute to industry events that aim to grow the global community. These activities cost more than they earn, but I think they matter for the long-term health of the hobby.

Support the work

If Ebi Otaku has been useful to you, please consider supporting the project on Patron. Funds go directly to:

  • Server, image hosting, and translation review costs
  • Travel and venue costs for community seminars
  • The time it takes to keep this site genuinely human-curated rather than auto-generated
